Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol (MBBT) is an organic UV filter used in sunscreens that absorbs both UVA and UVB radiation, providing broad-spectrum protection against UV-induced skin damage.
Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol (abbreviated MBBT), commercially known as Tinosorb M and listed under the INCI name Bisoctrizol, is a modern broad-spectrum organic UV filter used in sunscreens and photoprotective skincare products. It provides effective protection against both UVA and UVB radiation, making it one of the most comprehensive UV filters currently available.
MBBT protects the skin through two complementary mechanisms:
This dual mechanism makes MBBT one of the most effective broad-spectrum UV filters available. It also demonstrates excellent photostability, meaning it does not degrade significantly under UV exposure and maintains its protective efficacy over time.
MBBT is used exclusively in cosmetic formulations intended for topical (external) application. Common product types include:
In the European Union, MBBT is approved as a UV filter in cosmetic products and is listed in Annex VI of the EU Cosmetics Regulation (Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009). The maximum permitted concentration in finished cosmetic products is 10%.
Based on available scientific data, MBBT is considered safe for use in cosmetic sunscreen products. Due to the relatively large particle size, skin penetration is minimal, meaning systemic absorption is very low. The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) of the European Commission has evaluated MBBT on multiple occasions and concluded that it is safe when used within the approved concentration limit.
Potential adverse effects are rare and may include:
Compared to some other organic UV filters, MBBT has a favorable safety profile and is commonly found in products formulated for sensitive skin.
The ecotoxicological properties of MBBT are the subject of ongoing scientific research. Current data suggest that MBBT has a lower potential for coral reef damage compared to some other organic UV filters such as oxybenzone. Nevertheless, environmental agencies generally recommend the use of mineral-based sunscreens when swimming in sensitive marine ecosystems.
