miRNA Profiling (also referred to as MicroRNA Profiling or miRNome Analysis) is a molecular biology technique used to comprehensively analyze the patterns of small, non-coding ribonucleic acid molecules known as microRNAs (miRNAs) in a biological sample. MicroRNAs are short RNA molecules approximately 18 to 25 nucleotides in length that regulate gene expression – meaning they control which genes are switched on or off within a cell. Profiling these molecules creates a detailed map of cellular and tissue activity, offering valuable insights into health and disease states.
The process involves several key steps. First, RNA is extracted from a biological sample such as blood, tissue, or urine. The miRNAs are then identified and measured using specialized technologies. The most commonly used methods include:

One of the primary uses of miRNA Profiling is in cancer diagnosis. Tumor development characteristically alters miRNA patterns in cells and circulating blood. The aggressiveness and stage of a tumor can also be estimated based on its miRNA signature.
