Mitophagy is a specialised process of autophagy that focuses on the targeted cleaning and regeneration of damaged or dysfunctional mitochondria. Mitochondria, often referred to as the "power plants of the cell", are responsible for energy production in the form of ATP and play a central role in metabolism and cell health. ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate, a chemical molecule that supplies cells with energy.
When mitochondria no longer function properly, this can lead to oxidative stress and the release of harmful molecules that can damage cells and surrounding tissue. Mitophagy removes these defective mitochondria and replaces them with new, healthy mitochondria, thereby maintaining cell function and energy production. This process is crucial for the prevention of age-related diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's and Parkinson's), cardiovascular diseases and metabolic disorders. Impaired mitophagy is associated with chronic diseases and accelerated ageing.
Nutrients and bioactive substances can support mitophagy. One of these substances is spermidine, which is found in spermidine-rich foods such as wheat germ and soya beans. Spermidine activates cellular signalling pathways that promote both mitophagy and general autophagy. By supporting these processes, spermidine helps to maintain the quality and function of mitochondria, which plays a key role in cellular energy supply and overall health.
