A Mother Child Cure (German: Mutter-Kind-Kur) is a state-supported medical prevention or rehabilitation programme in which mothers – and in some cases fathers – attend a specialised health clinic together with their children. The primary aim is to restore physical and mental health, overcome chronic exhaustion, and strengthen the overall wellbeing of the entire family unit.
In Germany, these programmes are typically organised and funded by statutory health insurance providers or by organisations such as the Müttergenesungswerk (Mothers´ Recovery Foundation). The stay generally lasts three weeks and takes place in accredited rehabilitation facilities tailored to the specific needs of mothers and children.
In principle, women with children under 12 years of age – and in special circumstances up to 18 years – may apply for a Mother Child Cure. A medical referral is required, along with evidence that outpatient measures have been insufficient. Common reasons for application include:
The stay at a Mother-Child rehabilitation centre is medically supervised and includes an individually tailored therapy plan. Typical offerings include:
Applications are typically submitted through a general practitioner or a recognised counselling centre. Support is available through the Müttergenesungswerk and affiliated advisory services of organisations such as the German Red Cross, Caritas, or Diakonie. Statutory health insurers cover most costs when medical necessity is confirmed. In cases of financial hardship, personal co-payments may be reduced or waived entirely.
Research demonstrates that Mother Child Cures have a lasting positive impact on the health of participants. Many mothers report significant improvements in physical and mental wellbeing, better management of daily responsibilities, and a stronger parent-child relationship following the programme. The benefits extend beyond the individual mother and positively affect the entire family in the long term.
