Things worth knowing about "MS Symptoms"

MS symptoms are diverse and can affect nerves, muscles, and senses. Learn which signs may indicate Multiple Sclerosis and when to seek medical advice.

What Are MS Symptoms?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system in which the immune system attacks the myelin sheaths surrounding nerve fibers. This disrupts or slows nerve signal transmission, resulting in a wide range of neurological symptoms. MS symptoms vary greatly from person to person and can change over time.

Common MS Symptoms

The symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis can be grouped into several categories. Some appear early in the disease course, while others emerge in later stages.

Motor Symptoms

  • Muscle weakness in the arms or legs
  • Spasticity (muscle stiffness and spasms)
  • Coordination problems and balance disturbances
  • Walking difficulties and increased risk of falls

Sensory Symptoms

  • Numbness or tingling in the limbs, face, or trunk
  • Pain, including neuropathic pain
  • Lhermitte sign: an electric shock-like sensation when bending the neck forward

Visual Symptoms

  • Optic neuritis: inflammation of the optic nerve causing blurred vision and eye pain
  • Double vision (diplopia)
  • Involuntary eye movements (nystagmus)

Cognitive and Psychological Symptoms

  • Difficulties with concentration and memory
  • Fatigue: extreme, debilitating exhaustion – one of the most common MS symptoms
  • Mood swings, depression, and anxiety disorders

Bladder and Bowel Dysfunction

  • Frequent urge to urinate or urinary incontinence
  • Constipation or bowel incontinence

Sexual Dysfunction

  • Erectile dysfunction in men
  • Reduced sensitivity and lubrication problems in women

Relapsing vs. Progressive Symptoms

In relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), symptoms occur in relapses and partially or fully recover afterward. In progressive MS, symptoms gradually worsen without clear relapses. Approximately 85% of people with MS initially have the relapsing-remitting form.

When to See a Doctor

Anyone who suddenly experiences vision problems, numbness, unexplained weakness, or severe fatigue should consult a doctor promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment can positively influence the course of the disease.

Diagnosis

Multiple Sclerosis is diagnosed through a combination of MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), neurological examination, cerebrospinal fluid analysis (lumbar puncture), and evoked potentials. The McDonald Criteria serve as the internationally recognized diagnostic standard.

Treatment

While there is currently no cure for MS, effective therapies are available:

  • Relapse treatment: High-dose corticosteroids to reduce inflammation quickly
  • Disease-modifying therapies (DMTs): Medications such as interferon beta, glatiramer acetate, or monoclonal antibodies to reduce relapse frequency
  • Symptomatic therapy: Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pain management, and psychological support
  • Rehabilitation: To improve quality of life and maintain independence
