MT-2 (Melanotan II) is a synthetic peptide known for promoting skin tanning. It acts via melanocortin receptors and is not approved for human use in most countries.
MT-2 (Melanotan II) is a synthetic peptide known for promoting skin tanning. It acts via melanocortin receptors and is not approved for human use in most countries.
MT-2, commonly referred to as Melanotan II, is a synthetically produced peptide that structurally resembles the naturally occurring hormone alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It was originally developed in the 1980s at the University of Arizona, with the initial goal of promoting skin tanning as a safer alternative to UV radiation and potentially reducing the risk of skin cancer. MT-2 is not an approved medication and is classified exclusively as a research chemical.
MT-2 binds to melanocortin receptors, particularly MC1R and MC4R. These receptors play a key role in regulating skin pigmentation, appetite, sexual arousal, and various functions of the central nervous system.
MT-2 is typically administered by subcutaneous injection (under the skin) and is available on various underground markets in powder or liquid form. It is commonly used by individuals seeking rapid skin tanning or enhanced libido. Since MT-2 is neither approved as a medicine nor cleared for human use in most countries – including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom – its procurement, possession, and use carry significant legal and health risks.
Because MT-2 is not clinically approved and no controlled long-term human clinical trials exist, the associated risks are considerable. Known and potential side effects include:
MT-2 is not approved as a medicinal product in the European Union or in many other countries. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and national regulatory authorities explicitly warn against its use. Purchasing MT-2 online carries additional risks due to counterfeit or contaminated products. Anyone who has used MT-2 and experiences side effects should seek medical advice promptly.
A related peptide, afamelanotide (brand name: Scenesse), is an MC1R agonist approved in the EU for the prevention of phototoxicity in patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP). Unlike MT-2, afamelanotide has undergone rigorous clinical trials and is a regulated medicinal product.
