Mycotrophic (from Greek mykes = fungus and trophe = nourishment) refers to organisms – typically plants – that obtain some or all of their nutrients through a close association with fungi. This relationship is known as mycorrhiza and represents one of the most widespread symbioses in the plant kingdom.
Many plants can survive without a fungal partner but benefit significantly from the symbiosis. These are described as facultatively mycotrophic. The fungi effectively extend the root network of the plant, improving the uptake of water and minerals such as phosphorus and nitrogen.
Obligately mycotrophic plants are entirely dependent on their fungal partner and cannot survive without it. Classic examples include certain orchid species and some wintergreen plants. These plants often show reduced or absent chlorophyll production and perform little or no photosynthesis.
A special form is holomycotrophy: plants that live entirely without photosynthesis and meet all their carbon and nutrient needs through the fungal partner. These plants contain no chlorophyll and often appear strikingly colored (yellow, white, or brownish).
Mycorrhiza is the biological foundation of mycotrophy. Fungal hyphae penetrate or surround plant roots, forming an extensive network in the soil. Two main types are distinguished:
Mycotrophy plays a central role in terrestrial ecosystems. Mycotrophic plants improve soil structure through their fungal networks, promote nutrient cycling, and support the stability of entire forest communities. Fungal networks in the soil – often referred to as the Wood Wide Web – even enable the exchange of nutrients between different plants.
Understanding mycotrophic relationships has practical implications:
Mycotrophy should not be confused with parasitism: while parasitism harms one of the partners, mycotrophy is predominantly a mutualistic symbiosis where both partners benefit. An exception is mycoheterotrophy, in which the plant unilaterally extracts carbon from the fungus without providing anything in return.
