Mysophobie, umgangssprachlich auch als „Keimangst“ bekannt, beschreibt die pathologische Angst vor Schmutz, Bakterien oder Kontamination.
Betroffene erleben bereits beim Gedanken an Keime starken inneren Stress und meiden konsequent potenzielle „Schmutzquellen“. Die Erkrankung kann sowohl als eigenständige Angststörung als auch im Rahmen einer Zwangsstörung auftreten.
Typische Verhaltensweisen sind übermäßiges Händewaschen, Desinfizieren, das Vermeiden öffentlicher Orte oder wiederholte Kontrollhandlungen. Diese Reaktionen dienen der kurzfristigen Angstreduktion, führen langfristig jedoch zu sozialer Isolation, Arbeitsunfähigkeit oder gesundheitlichen Problemen durch übertriebene Hygiene.
Behandelt wird Mysophobie meist durch kognitive Verhaltenstherapie mit Expositionstraining. In schwereren Fällen kann zusätzlich eine medikamentöse Therapie mit SSRIs (z. B. Sertralin) helfen. Entscheidend ist, dass Betroffene frühzeitig Hilfe suchen, da sich die Angst ohne Intervention oft verschärft und verfestigt.
