Indications
Nasotracheal intubation is used in a variety of clinical situations, particularly when oral access is not feasible or desirable:
- Surgical procedures involving the mouth, jaw, or face
- Dental and oral surgery performed under general anesthesia
- Trauma patients with limited mouth opening (trismus)
- Long-term mechanical ventilation in intensive care when the oral route is unsuitable

Procedure
During nasotracheal intubation, a lubricated, flexible endotracheal tube is carefully inserted through one nostril. The tube is advanced through the nasopharynx (nasal throat), past the larynx (voice box), and into the trachea. The procedure is typically performed under direct vision using a laryngoscope or a flexible bronchoscope to ensure correct placement. Correct positioning is confirmed by auscultating breath sounds and using capnography (measurement of exhaled carbon dioxide).
