Things worth knowing about "Navel Correction"

Navel correction is a surgical procedure to reshape or correct the appearance of the belly button. It is performed for aesthetic or medical reasons.

What is Navel Correction?

Navel correction, medically known as umbilicoplasty, is a surgical procedure that alters the shape, size, or appearance of the belly button (navel). It can be performed for purely cosmetic reasons or as a medically necessary intervention. The procedure is often carried out in combination with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) but can also be performed as a standalone operation.

Reasons for Navel Correction

There are several reasons why patients may consider navel correction:

  • Aesthetic concerns: Dissatisfaction with the shape of the navel, such as one that is too large, too small, or irregularly shaped.
  • Umbilical hernia: A hernia at the navel can distort its appearance. Following surgical hernia repair, the navel is often cosmetically corrected at the same time.
  • Changes after pregnancy: Pregnancies can permanently alter the belly button, for example causing it to protrude outward.
  • Significant weight loss: Major weight loss, such as after bariatric surgery, can lead to changes in the abdominal wall and navel area.
  • Congenital anomalies: In rare cases, congenital irregularities of the navel are surgically corrected.

Procedure

Navel correction is typically performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or mild sedation, and in some cases under general anesthesia. The exact procedure depends on the individual situation and the desired outcome:

  • Small incisions are made within or around the navel.
  • Excess skin and, if necessary, fatty tissue are removed or repositioned.
  • The navel is reshaped to the desired form and closed with fine sutures.
  • Scars are usually hidden inside the navel and are therefore barely visible.

The procedure typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes.

Aftercare and Recovery

After the procedure, patients should follow certain guidelines to support optimal healing:

  • Physical rest and avoidance of strenuous activity for several weeks.
  • Regular wound check-ups with the treating surgeon.
  • Avoiding swimming pools or saunas until the wound has fully healed.
  • Wearing compression garments if recommended by the surgeon.

Swelling and minor bruising in the treated area typically subside within a few weeks. The final result is often fully visible only after several months.

Risks and Possible Complications

As with any surgical procedure, navel correction carries potential risks:

  • Infection at the wound site
  • Bleeding or bruising
  • Abnormal scarring (keloids or hypertrophic scars)
  • Temporary numbness or altered sensation around the navel
  • Asymmetry or an unsatisfactory aesthetic outcome
  • In rare cases: delayed wound healing

A thorough consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon is strongly recommended before undergoing the procedure.

Costs and Insurance Coverage

When navel correction is performed purely for cosmetic reasons, it is generally considered a private, self-pay procedure and is not covered by public health insurance. Costs vary depending on the extent of the procedure and the clinic, and typically range from approximately 500 to 2,500 euros. If there is a clear medical indication, such as in the case of an umbilical hernia, partial or full coverage by health insurance may be possible.
