Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is an essential coenzyme found in all living cells and plays a key role in cell metabolism. It is crucial for energy production as it acts as an electron transporter in the mitochondria and supports the conversion of nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body's main source of energy. In addition, NAD+ is involved in numerous biological processes such as DNA repair, inflammation regulation and antioxidant mechanisms.
With increasing age, NAD levels in the body decrease, which can lead to reduced cell function, reduced mitochondrial activity and increased susceptibility to age-related diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular problems and metabolic disorders. Low NAD levels are also associated with reduced autophagy, a cellular cleansing process in which damaged cellular components are broken down and recycled.
One natural way to support NAD levels is through the intake of NAD precursors such as nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) or nicotinamide riboside (NR). In addition, certain bioactive substances can support this process, including spermidine, a polyamine found in spermidine-rich foods such as wheat germ, mushrooms and soya beans. Spermidine is known for its ability to activate autophagy, which in turn improves mitochondrial function and can help maintain NAD levels. Through these synergistic effects, spermidine supports cell regeneration and could help to minimise age-related cell damage. An adequate supply of NAD+ is crucial for cell health, energy metabolism and overall vitality.
