Things worth knowing about "Nose Correction"

Nose correction is a surgical procedure to change the shape or function of the nose. It can be performed for aesthetic or medical reasons.

What is Nose Correction?

Nose correction, medically known as rhinoplasty, is a surgical procedure performed on the nose. It is carried out either for aesthetic purposes, to alter the shape or size of the nose, or for functional reasons, to address breathing difficulties. In many cases, both goals are combined in a single operation.

Reasons for Nose Correction

Aesthetic Reasons

  • Reducing or enlarging the overall size of the nose
  • Straightening a crooked nasal bridge
  • Removing a hump on the nasal bridge
  • Reshaping the nasal tip (e.g., lifting or narrowing)
  • Adjusting the nasal wings (alae)
  • Correcting asymmetries

Medical Reasons

  • Straightening a deviated nasal septum that impairs breathing
  • Correcting damage caused by nasal fractures
  • Treating congenital malformations
  • Improving nasal airflow in cases of chronic obstruction

Procedure

Rhinoplasty is typically performed under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation. Two main surgical techniques are used:

  • Closed rhinoplasty: All incisions are made inside the nose, leaving no visible scars.
  • Open rhinoplasty: A small incision is made on the columella (the strip of tissue between the nostrils), giving the surgeon better access to the internal structures.

Bone, cartilage, and soft tissue are then reshaped according to the planned outcome. The operation typically lasts between one and three hours.

Preparation and Planning

Before the procedure, a thorough consultation with the surgeon takes place. The patient´s goals are discussed, the facial anatomy is analysed, and realistic outcomes are outlined. Digital imaging or simulation software may be used to visualise potential results. Blood-thinning medications should be stopped before surgery as advised by the physician.

Recovery and Aftercare

After the operation, the nose is protected with a plaster cast or splint. Common experiences during the healing phase include:

  • Swelling and bruising around the face, especially under the eyes
  • Nasal congestion and reduced breathing capacity in the first few weeks
  • Mild pain or a feeling of pressure

The cast or splint is usually removed after 7 to 10 days. Visible swelling typically subsides within 2 to 4 weeks, but the final result may not be fully visible for 6 to 12 months, as finer tissue structures take longer to settle.

Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries certain risks:

  • Infection or post-operative bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Asymmetries or unsatisfactory aesthetic outcome
  • Changes in the sense of smell
  • Breathing difficulties due to swelling or scar tissue
  • Need for revision surgery (revision rhinoplasty)

An experienced specialist in plastic or ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery can significantly reduce these risks.

Costs and Insurance Coverage

Purely aesthetic nose procedures are generally not covered by statutory health insurance. In cases of medical necessity, such as a significantly deviated septum causing breathing impairment, coverage by the health insurer may be possible. It is advisable to clarify this with the insurance provider before the procedure.
