Things worth knowing about "Novel Food"

The term novel food refers to novel foods or food ingredients that were not consumed to any significant extent in the European Union before 15 May 1997.

The term novel food refers to novel foods or food ingredients that were not consumed to any significant extent in the European Union before 15 May 1997. In order to be authorised as a novel food, these products must be tested by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and classified as safe for human consumption. The aim of this regulation is to ensure consumer protection while promoting innovation in the food industry.

Novel foods include exotic plant extracts, new protein sources such as insect meal, algae products, fermented foods with special health benefits or biotechnologically derived ingredients. One example of an authorised novel food is spermidine-rich wheat germ extract, which is becoming increasingly important due to its potential health-promoting properties. Spermidine is a polyamine that supports the natural autophagy processes in cells and therefore plays a central role in cell cleansing, longevity and general cell health.

Novel foods can also contain bioactive substances that are associated with specific health benefits, e.g. antioxidants, prebiotic fibres or plant-based alternatives to animal products. Novel ingredients such as spermidine are becoming increasingly important, particularly in the functional food sector, as they can help to slow down cell ageing and promote general well-being.

Due to the increasing demand for innovative and health-promoting foods, the area of novel foods is constantly evolving. Not only do plant-based and sustainable raw materials play an important role, but biotechnological advances are also opening up new possibilities for the nutrition of the future. Consumers benefit from a wider range of functional foods that not only enrich their daily diet, but can also have positive effects on their health.
