Things worth knowing about "Nursing Pillow"

A nursing pillow is an ergonomic support cushion designed to help mothers and babies achieve a comfortable breastfeeding position. It relieves strain on the neck, shoulders, and arms.

What Is a Nursing Pillow?

A nursing pillow is a specially shaped support cushion designed to help breastfeeding mothers and their babies maintain a comfortable and ergonomically correct position during feeding. It is placed around the waist and hip area of the mother, raising the baby to an optimal height at the breast. Nursing pillows come in various shapes, including crescent-shaped, C-shaped, and elongated designs.

Function and Benefits

Nursing pillows serve several important purposes during breastfeeding:

  • Musculoskeletal relief: The pillow supports the weight of the baby, reducing strain on the neck, shoulders, arms, and back. This helps prevent tension and postural problems that can result from holding the baby for extended periods.
  • Optimal breastfeeding position: By bringing the baby to the correct height, the pillow facilitates proper latching. A good latch is essential for preventing sore nipples and blocked milk ducts.
  • Relaxation: By reducing physical strain, the mother can relax more easily, which may positively influence the milk ejection reflex (let-down reflex).
  • Versatile use: Nursing pillows can also serve as side-sleeper pillows during pregnancy, positioning aids for infants, or support during bottle-feeding.

Usage and Breastfeeding Positions

A nursing pillow can be used in various breastfeeding positions:

Cradle Hold

The pillow is wrapped around the waist, and the baby is placed on it in a side-lying position facing the breast. This is the most common breastfeeding position and is significantly easier with the support of a nursing pillow.

Football Hold (Clutch Hold)

The baby is positioned under the arm of the mother, with the nursing pillow providing support underneath. This position is particularly suitable after a cesarean section or for mothers with larger breasts.

Side-Lying Position

The nursing pillow can be used as a support for both mother and baby while lying down, enabling relaxed nighttime breastfeeding.

Materials and Selection Criteria

When choosing a nursing pillow, the following factors should be considered:

  • Filling: Common fillings include microbeads (EPS), polyester fibers, or natural materials such as spelt husks. Microbeads adapt flexibly to body contours, while natural fillings offer superior breathability.
  • Cover: The cover should be removable and machine-washable. Materials that have been tested for harmful substances, ideally certified under the OEKO-TEX Standard 100, are recommended.
  • Shape and size: The choice depends on the preferred breastfeeding position and the body size of the mother.
  • Safety certification: Since the baby comes into direct contact with the pillow, choosing certified and tested products is important.

Medical Relevance

From a medical perspective, a nursing pillow can help prevent common breastfeeding problems. An ergonomically correct breastfeeding position reduces the risk of mastitis (breast inflammation), blocked milk ducts, and sore nipples. Midwives and lactation consultants frequently recommend nursing pillows, especially during the first weeks after birth when mother and baby are still learning breastfeeding techniques. After a cesarean delivery, the pillow can also reduce pressure on the surgical incision by keeping the weight of the baby away from the abdominal area.

Safety Considerations

A nursing pillow should never be used as a sole sleeping surface for the baby, as it may increase the risk of suffocation. In line with guidelines for the prevention of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), no loose pillows or cushions should be placed in the sleeping area of the infant. The pillow is intended exclusively for supervised use during breastfeeding and supported positioning.
