Things worth knowing about "Octane"

Octane is a saturated hydrocarbon belonging to the alkane group, with the molecular formula C₈H₁₈. It is a key component of gasoline and serves as the reference substance for the octane rating.

What Is Octane?

Octane (molecular formula: C₈H₁₈) is a saturated hydrocarbon belonging to the alkane group. It consists of a chain of eight carbon atoms bonded to hydrogen atoms. Octane is a colorless, volatile liquid with a characteristic odor and occurs naturally in crude oil. It is a major component of gasoline and other fuels.

Chemical Properties

Octane belongs to the saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons. It is nearly insoluble in water but dissolves readily in organic solvents. Several isomers of octane exist, of which n-octane (normal octane) represents the unbranched chain form. Particularly well known is isooctane (2,2,4-trimethylpentane), which serves as the reference substance for the octane rating of fuels.

The Octane Rating

The octane rating (or octane number) is a measure of the knock resistance of a fuel. It indicates how resistant a fuel is to uncontrolled auto-ignition inside an engine. Isooctane is assigned an octane rating of 100 by definition and represents the knock-resistant reference, while n-heptane, with a rating of 0, serves as the knock-prone reference. The higher the octane rating of a fuel, the better it performs in high-compression engines.

Occurrence and Uses

Octane occurs naturally in crude oil and is obtained through distillation and refining. Its primary use is as a fuel component in the petrochemical industry. Additional applications include:

  • As a solvent in chemical processes
  • As a reference substance in chemical analysis
  • As a component in laboratory chemicals and calibration standards

Health and Toxicological Aspects

Octane has health relevance because direct contact or inhalation of its vapors can cause harmful effects. Key toxicological considerations include:

  • Inhalation: Breathing octane vapors may cause dizziness, headaches, nausea, and at high concentrations, loss of consciousness.
  • Skin contact: Repeated or prolonged skin contact can lead to skin irritation and defatting of the skin.
  • Eye contact: Contact with the eyes causes irritation.
  • Ingestion: Oral intake of octane is hazardous and can lead to serious poisoning symptoms.

Workplace exposure limits for octane vapors are established to prevent health damage. In cases of suspected poisoning, a physician or poison control center should be contacted immediately.

Environmental Aspects

As a hydrocarbon, octane is flammable and volatile. As a fuel component, it contributes to the formation of air pollutants and smog. In the environment, octane can be broken down by microbial degradation, but its release into soils or water bodies poses a contamination risk.
