In everyday practice, an orthopaedic surgeon treats patients with complaints such as knee pain, shoulder pain, foot misalignments, hip problems or spinal curvatures. Diagnostics include clinical examinations, imaging procedures such as X-rays, MRI or ultrasound and functional analyses. Therapy ranges from conservative methods such as physiotherapy, supports, injections or acupuncture to surgical interventions, such as joint replacement or disc surgery.
Some orthopaedic surgeons specialise in certain areas, e.g.sports orthopaedics, paediatric orthopaedics or spinal surgery. In modern orthopaedics biological procedures are also becoming increasingly important - such as the use of autologous blood (PRP), hyaluronic acid or shock wave therapy. Also preventive approaches such as posture analysis, muscle building and movement coaching are important components of orthopaedic care. Orthopaedists often work on an interdisciplinary basis with physiotherapists, rheumatologists or pain therapists .
