Things worth knowing about "Osteoarthritis"

Arthrosis, also known as joint wear and tear or osteoarthritis, is a degenerative joint disease in which the joint cartilage - the protective layer between the bones - gradually breaks down.

In osteoarthritis, bones rub directly against each other without the buffer zone of the joint cartilage, which leads to inflammation, pain, swelling, stiffness and limited mobility. Frequently affected joints are the knees, hips, hands and spine. Although osteoarthritis cannot be cured, measures such as targeted training and exercise, physiotherapy and a balanced, anti-inflammatory diet can alleviate the symptoms.

Osteoarthritis is often age-related, as the cartilage loses elasticity with increasing age and becomes more susceptible to damage. Excessive body weight also puts strain on the joints, especially the knees and hips. A family history of osteoarthritis can also increase the risk of developing the disease. Last but not least, sporting activities or occupational stress can wear down the cartilage.

A targeted diet can support joint health and reduce inflammation. The most important nutrients and their mode of action include anti-inflammatory nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants such as vitamin E, zinc and selenium. Vitamin D also supports bone stability and regulates inflammation. A vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk of osteoarthritis. In addition, vitamin C promotes the formation of collagen, which is necessary for maintaining and strengthening cartilage tissue.
