Things worth knowing about "Oxidative stress"

Oxidative stress occurs when more free radicals are formed in the body than can be neutralised by the body's own or supplied antioxidants

Free radicals are aggressive oxygen molecules that are produced naturally during metabolism - for example during cellular respiration or as a result of external influences such as UV radiation, air pollution, smoking or stress. If they are not intercepted, they attack cell membranes, proteins and DNA, thereby accelerating ageing processes and the development of numerous diseases.

Chronically increased oxidative stress is considered a key mechanism in many diseases of civilisation: These include cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, type 2 diabetes, chronic inflammatory diseases as well as skin problems and premature ageing. At a cellular level, oxidative stress impairs the mitochondrial function, disrupts repair mechanisms and weakens the immune system - which also affects regeneration and performance.

Targeted protection against oxidative stress is achieved through antioxidant micronutrients such as astaxanthin, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium or polyphenols. Functional active ingredients such as lactoferrin also show in studies cell-protecting and inflammation-regulating effects, which can bind free radicals and stabilise the balance in the oxidative environment. An antioxidant-orientated diet, regular exercise, sufficient sleep and avoiding external stress factors are further key components for the long-term reduction of oxidative stress.
