Things worth knowing about "Ozempic"
Ozempic® is a prescription medicine containing the active ingredient semaglutide, which was originally developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes
Ozempic® belongs to the group of GLP-1 receptor agonistsGLP-1 receptor agonists, which mimic the body's own hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) . Ozempic has a blood sugar-lowering effect by increasing the insulin secretion, which inhibits glucagon release and delays gastric emptying. These mechanisms not only lead to better blood sugar control, but also to a significantly reduced feeling of hunger - which is why Ozempic is increasingly being used for weight reduction
.Ozempic is injected subcutaneously(under the skin) once a week, usually into the thigh, abdomen or upper arm. The dosage is customised, usually starting at 0.25 mg per week, later increasing to 0.5 mg to 1 mg. Although it is officially approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes it is also increasingly being used off-label for obesity without diabetes - a related preparation, Wegovy®, is specifically approved for this purpose. Some studies have shown weight losses of over 10 % of the initial weight.
Despite the potential benefits, there are risks associated with its use: The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipationand loss of appetite. Less frequently, gallstones, pancreatitis or changes in the thyroid gland can occur. In addition, the long-term effect on the cardiovascular system in non-diabetic users has not yet been conclusively clarified. It should therefore only be used under medical supervision and be part of a comprehensive therapy concept with diet, exercise and, if necessary, psychological support
