Paediatrics is the branch of medicine dedicated to the health, development, and diseases of children and adolescents from birth through late adolescence.
Paediatrics (also spelled pediatrics in American English) is a medical specialty focused on the physical, mental, and social health of children and young people from birth through adolescence – in most countries up to the age of 18. Doctors specialising in this field are called paediatricians or pediatricians. They provide comprehensive care tailored to the unique biological and developmental needs of growing patients.
Children are not simply small adults. Their bodies are constantly developing, their organ systems respond differently to illness and medications, and diagnostic and therapeutic approaches must be adapted to each age and developmental stage.
Paediatrics emerged as an independent medical discipline in the 19th century, with the establishment of dedicated children´s hospitals in cities such as Paris and Vienna. These institutions allowed for the systematic study of childhood diseases and laid the foundation for modern paediatric medicine. Today, the specialty is one of the most wide-ranging in all of medicine.
Modern paediatrics encompasses a broad range of subspecialties, including:
Paediatricians carry out a wide range of medical activities, including:
A defining characteristic of paediatrics is its age-specific approach. Reference values for blood pressure, heart rate, laboratory parameters, and drug dosages differ considerably across age groups. Psychosocial factors also play an important role: the family environment, social circumstances, and school situation of the child are always considered as part of holistic care.
Communication in paediatrics operates on two levels: with the child in an age-appropriate manner, and with the parents or guardians in a comprehensive and transparent way. This requires strong interpersonal skills and empathy from the treating physician.
Prevention is a cornerstone of paediatric practice. Through regular well-child visits and comprehensive vaccination programmes, many conditions can be detected early or prevented entirely. Nationally recommended schedules – such as those issued by the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) in Germany or the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) in the United States – guide preventive care throughout childhood and adolescence.
