Things worth knowing about "Partial denture"

A partial denture replaces missing teeth when natural teeth are still present. It is anchored in the mouth and improves chewing, speech, and appearance.

What is a Partial Denture?

A partial denture is a removable or fixed dental prosthesis that replaces one or more missing teeth while the remaining natural teeth are preserved. Unlike a complete denture, which is used when all teeth are missing, a partial denture is used when some natural teeth remain and can serve as anchors. Partial dentures are among the most common forms of dental prosthetics and are custom-made by dental technicians.

Types of Partial Dentures

Removable Partial Denture

The removable partial denture is the most widely used type. It typically consists of a plastic or metal framework (known as a cast metal partial denture) with artificial teeth attached. Special retaining elements – such as clasps or telescope crowns – anchor the denture to the remaining natural teeth. The patient can insert and remove the denture for cleaning.

Fixed Partial Denture (Bridge)

A dental bridge is a fixed type of partial replacement that is permanently anchored to adjacent teeth or implants. It cannot be removed by the patient and often provides a high level of wearing comfort due to its stable anchorage. Bridges are frequently made from ceramic, metal, or a combination of both materials.

Implant-Supported Partial Denture

With an implant-supported partial denture, artificial tooth roots (implants) are surgically inserted into the jawbone. These serve as stable anchor points for the denture and help prevent bone loss in the jaw. This solution is considered particularly durable and comfortable.

Materials

Partial dentures are made from various materials depending on clinical requirements and patient preferences:

  • Plastic (acrylic): Lightweight and cost-effective, but less stable and durable.
  • Metal (cobalt-chromium alloy): Very stable and thin, providing good wearing comfort.
  • Ceramic / zirconia: Aesthetically high-quality and tooth-colored, particularly suitable for visible areas.
  • Combinations: Materials are often combined to balance stability and aesthetics.

When is a Partial Denture Recommended?

A partial denture is recommended when:

  • One or more teeth are missing, but enough natural teeth remain to serve as support.
  • Implants are not possible for medical or financial reasons.
  • Chewing function, speech, or appearance is affected by missing teeth.
  • Drifting of remaining teeth into the gap needs to be prevented.

Adjustment and Adaptation Period

After receiving a partial denture, an adjustment period is necessary. During this time, patients may experience pressure sores, changes in speech, or increased saliva flow. Regular follow-up appointments with the dentist are important to adjust the denture and ensure a good fit. Over time, most patients adapt well to wearing their denture.

Care of the Partial Denture

Proper care extends the lifespan of the denture and protects oral health:

  • Daily cleaning with a specialized denture brush and mild cleaning agent.
  • Soaking in denture cleaning tablets or clear water overnight.
  • Regular professional cleaning by a dentist or dental technician.
  • Avoiding hot water, as it can warp the denture.

Durability and Costs

Depending on material and care, a partial denture typically lasts 5 to 10 years on average. Replacement may then be necessary as the jaw and oral mucosa change over time. Costs vary depending on the type, material, and complexity. In many countries, health insurers cover part of the costs. A supplemental dental insurance plan can significantly reduce out-of-pocket expenses.
