PEG-MGF (Pegylated Mechano Growth Factor) is a chemically modified version of Mechano Growth Factor (MGF), itself a splice variant of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1). The term pegylation refers to the attachment of polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains to the peptide molecule. This modification significantly extends the half-life of MGF in the bloodstream: while native MGF remains stable for only a few minutes in circulation, PEG-MGF can remain biologically active for several days.
MGF is naturally produced in muscle tissue in response to mechanical stress, such as physical exercise or muscle injury. It plays a critical role in activating satellite cells – the stem-cell-like precursor cells of muscle fibers – thereby supporting muscle repair and growth.
Pegylation fundamentally alters the pharmacological profile of the peptide. The PEG molecule shields MGF from enzymatic degradation in the blood, substantially increasing its bioavailability and duration of action.
