Peptidases are enzymes that hydrolyse peptide bonds and break down peptides into amino acids to aid protein digestion and nutrient absorption.
Peptidases are specialised enzymesthat are responsible for the degradation of proteins into smaller peptides and finally into amino acids. They play a central role in protein digestion in the gastrointestinal tract and in cellular metabolism. There are two main types: endopeptidases, which cleave peptide bonds inside protein molecules, and exopeptidases, which cleave amino acids from the edge of the chain.
These proteolytic enzymes are found both in the digestive system and in body cells and are essential for numerous physiological processes. In the stomach, for example, pepsin has an effect, while in the small intestine enzymes such as trypsin or chymotrypsin are active. However, peptidases also play an important role in the immune system, in cell regeneration and in protein turnover within tissues.
An imbalance in peptidase activity can be associated with various diseases such as inflammation, autoimmune reactions or digestive problems. In medical research, peptidases are therefore not only investigated for diagnostic purposes, but also as therapeutic target structures - for example in diseases.strong data-end=""1952"" data-start=""1943"">cancer, neurodegenerative diseases or digestive disorders. Certain peptidases are also used in food supplements to specifically improve protein absorption.
