Die Photosynthese ist ein lebenswichtiger biologischer Prozess, bei dem grüne Pflanzen, Algen und Cyanobakterien mithilfe von Lichtenergie, Wasser (H₂O) und Kohlenstoffdioxid (CO₂) Glukose (C₆H₁₂O₆) und Sauerstoff (O₂) produzieren. Dieser Vorgang findet in den Chloroplasten statt – pflanzlichen Zellorganellen, die das grüne Pigment Chlorophyll enthalten. Chlorophyll absorbiert das Sonnenlicht, das als Energiequelle dient, um aus anorganischen Stoffen energiereiche organische Verbindungen herzustellen.

Die Photosynthese läuft in zwei Hauptphasen ab:

Lichtabhängige Reaktion (in den Thylakoidmembranen): Hier wird Sonnenlicht absorbiert, Wasser gespalten (Photolyse) und ATP sowie NADPH gebildet. Dabei entsteht Sauerstoff als Nebenprodukt.

Lichtunabhängige Reaktion (Calvin-Zyklus, im Stroma der Chloroplasten): Mit Hilfe von ATP und NADPH wird CO₂ in Glukose umgewandelt – ein Prozess, der unabhängig vom Licht, aber abhängig von den Produkten der ersten Phase ist.
Die Photosynthese ist nicht nur Grundlage für das pflanzliche Wachstum, sondern auch entscheidend für das globale Klimasystem. Sie bindet CO₂ aus der Atmosphäre, produziert Sauerstoff und liefert damit die Energiequelle für fast alle Lebewesen auf der Erde. Ohne Photosynthese gäbe es keinen Sauerstoffkreislauf, keine Biomasseproduktion und keine stabile Atmosphäre.
