Wissenswertes über "Polio"
Polio, also known as poliomyelitis or polio, is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by the poliovirus.
The poliovirus mainly affects the nervous system and can lead to permanent paralysis or even death in severe cases. It is usually transmitted via contaminated water or food, less frequently through direct contact with infected people. Typical symptoms are fever, headache, nausea and muscle weakness, whereby a severe course can lead to irreversible paralysis. The poliovirus has antiviral properties in that it is able to multiply rapidly in the body and challenge the immune system. Due to its high resistance to environmental influences, it is particularly contagious.
Vaccination against polio is an effective form of protection, either as an oral vaccination with attenuated live viruses or as an injection vaccination with inactivated viruses. Lactoferrin, an endogenous protein with immunomodulatory and antiviral properties, is being investigated in scientific studies for its supportive effect in the fight against viral infections, including polio. Thanks to worldwide immunisation campaigns, the disease has been almost eradicated in many regions, but there are still isolated outbreaks in areas with low vaccination rates.
