Poppi-Scandal
The Poppi Scandal refers to a 2025 marketing and consumer fraud controversy surrounding the U.S. beverage brand Poppi, known for its so-called prebiotic sodas. The company advertised gut health benefits that were scientifically unsubstantiated, leading to a class-action lawsuit over misleading health claims and a multimillion-dollar settlement.
The backlash began after a Super Bowl campaign in which Poppi distributed custom vending machines to influencers as a promotional stunt. The move was widely criticized as tone-deaf and elitist, while consumers accused the brand of false advertising regarding prebiotic benefits. The lawsuit soon gained traction, highlighting the gap between marketing claims and scientific evidence.
Poppi ultimately agreed to an USD 8.9 million settlement without admitting wrongdoing. The case has since become a symbol of healthwashing and deceptive marketing, underscoring the need for stricter regulation of functional food advertising and transparency about scientific validation.
