Things worth knowing about "Propene"

Propene (also known as propylene) is a colorless, flammable hydrocarbon gas that plays a central role in the petrochemical industry and serves as a key raw material for plastics.

What is Propene?

Propene (chemical formula: CH2=CH-CH3) is a monounsaturated hydrocarbon belonging to the group of alkenes. At room temperature, it is a colorless, flammable gas with a faintly sweet odor. Also widely known as propylene, it is one of the most produced organic chemical compounds in the world.

Origin and Production

Propene is primarily produced as a by-product of petroleum refining and ethylene production. The main industrial production methods include:

  • Steam cracking: Thermal decomposition of petroleum fractions such as naphtha or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at high temperatures in the presence of steam.
  • Fluid catalytic cracking (FCC): Catalytic cracking of heavy oil fractions in refineries.
  • Propane dehydrogenation (PDH): Targeted conversion of propane to propene by removing hydrogen.
  • Metathesis: Conversion of ethylene and butene to propene using catalysts.

Chemical Properties

Propene contains a carbon-carbon double bond, making it highly chemically reactive. This double bond enables numerous addition, polymerization, and oxidation reactions. Key physical and chemical data include:

  • Molecular weight: 42.08 g/mol
  • Boiling point: -47.6 degrees Celsius
  • Melting point: -185.2 degrees Celsius
  • Autoignition temperature: approx. 455 degrees Celsius
  • Explosive limits in air: 2.0 to 11.7 vol.%

Industrial Applications and Significance

Propene is one of the most important petrochemical building blocks and serves as a raw material for a wide range of products:

  • Polypropylene (PP): The most significant application. Polypropylene is a versatile plastic used in packaging, automotive components, textile fibers, and medical devices.
  • Acrylonitrile: Precursor for synthetic fibers (e.g., acrylic) and ABS plastic.
  • Propylene oxide: Used in the production of polyurethane foams and propylene glycol.
  • Cumene: An intermediate in the production of phenol and acetone.
  • Acrylic acid: Precursor for superabsorbents and coatings.
  • Isopropanol: Solvent and disinfectant.

Health and Safety Considerations

Propene must be handled with care in industrial and laboratory settings. Key safety aspects include:

  • Flammability and explosion hazard: As a highly flammable gas, propene forms explosive mixtures with air. It must be used in well-ventilated areas away from ignition sources.
  • Asphyxiation risk: At high concentrations, propene can displace oxygen in the air, leading to asphyxiation.
  • Irritation: Direct contact may cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract.
  • Cryogenic burns: Liquid propene can cause cold burns upon skin contact.

Strict workplace exposure limits for propene are established by national and international regulatory authorities.

Environmental Considerations

Propene is a volatile organic compound (VOC) and contributes to the formation of ground-level ozone and photochemical smog. Its release into the atmosphere is therefore regulated. As part of efforts toward a circular economy, research is increasingly focused on sustainable production methods, such as biomass gasification or the catalytic conversion of bio-ethanol.
