The PSA level age chart shows age-specific normal ranges for prostate-specific antigen in the blood, helping doctors accurately assess elevated values in men.
The PSA level (prostate-specific antigen) measures a protein produced exclusively by prostate cells that enters the bloodstream. It is used as a key marker for the early detection and monitoring of prostate conditions, including prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and prostate inflammation (prostatitis).
PSA levels naturally increase with age because the prostate gland grows over time and produces more PSA. A single universal threshold for all age groups is therefore not sufficiently accurate. Age-adjusted reference values allow physicians to determine whether a measured PSA level is genuinely abnormal or simply reflects the natural aging process.
The following age-specific reference values are widely accepted in clinical practice. They are based on international guidelines and apply to men without a known prostate condition:
Values above these thresholds should be evaluated by a physician. An elevated PSA level does not automatically indicate cancer.
A raised PSA level can have several causes:
If the PSA level is elevated relative to the age chart, a urologist will typically recommend additional tests:
The European Association of Urology (EAU) recommends that men consider PSA testing from the age of 45 onwards, in consultation with their doctor. Men at higher risk -- such as those with a family history of prostate cancer or of African descent -- should be counselled from the age of 40. An informed decision is essential, as PSA screening carries both benefits and potential drawbacks, including the risk of overdiagnosis.
