The PSA level (Prostate-Specific Antigen) is a blood test result that measures the concentration of a protein produced exclusively by the prostate gland. An elevated PSA level can indicate various prostate disorders but is not on its own proof of cancer.

When Is the PSA Test Used?

Benefits and Limitations of the PSA Test

The PSA test is a useful screening tool, but it has limitations. It can produce false-positive results (elevated level without cancer) or false-negative results (normal level despite cancer being present). For this reason, the test result is always assessed in conjunction with other findings and the individual medical history of the patient. Most medical guidelines recommend discussing the test with a healthcare professional and making an informed, shared decision.

Treatment for an Elevated PSA Level
