The PSA test is a blood test that measures the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood. PSA is a protein produced exclusively by the prostate gland. How Does the Test Work?

Reference Values and Interpretation

There is no universally agreed-upon threshold that definitively distinguishes a healthy prostate from a diseased one. However, the following general reference ranges are commonly used:

Below 4 ng/mL: Generally considered normal, though prostate cancer cannot be entirely ruled out.
4 to 10 ng/mL: A grey zone; the risk of prostate cancer is elevated and further investigation is recommended.
Above 10 ng/mL: A significantly elevated level associated with a substantially increased risk of prostate cancer.

It is important to note that PSA levels can also be affected by factors such as age, prostate volume, physical activity, and certain medications.

Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS): An ultrasound examination of the prostate conducted via the rectum.
