Things worth knowing about "Psychoneuroimmunology"

Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI or also known as KPNI) is an interdisciplinary field of research that investigates the interactions between the nervous system, immune system and psyche.

The psychoneuroimmunology shows how psychological stress, emotions and social factors can influence immune function and, conversely, how the immune system influences behaviour and mental health. Chronic stress, anxiety and depression are closely linked to increased inflammatory activity and weakened immune defences.

One central mechanism is the release of cortisol, which can suppress the immune system during prolonged stress, increasing susceptibility to infections. At the same time, researchers are investigating how positive emotions, social interaction and targeted relaxation measures such as meditation or breathing techniques can strengthen the immune system.

Also anti-inflammatory substances such as omega-3 fatty acids, polyphenols or lactoferrin are being researched in the context of psychoneuroimmunology, as they could not only have immunomodulating but also neuroprotective effects. Ahealthy diet, exercise and sleep hygiene play a crucial role in the balance between the immune system and the psyche.

The findings of psychoneuroimmunology offer new approaches for the prevention and treatment of stress-related illnesses, autoimmune diseases and psychosomatic disorders by emphasising the importance of a holistic approach to health.
