PZR (Professional Teeth Cleaning) is a thorough dental cleaning performed by trained dental staff. It removes plaque, tartar, and stains, helping to prevent cavities and gum disease.
What is PZR?
PZR stands for Professionelle Zahnreinigung, the German term for Professional Teeth Cleaning. It is a preventive dental treatment carried out by trained dental hygienists or prophylaxis assistants in a dental practice. It complements daily oral hygiene at home by removing deposits that regular brushing and flossing cannot fully eliminate.
Treatment Procedure
A professional teeth cleaning typically involves several steps:
- Initial Assessment: The teeth and gums are examined, and plaque-disclosing tests may be used to identify problem areas.
- Removal of Tartar and Plaque: Hardened deposits (tartar) and soft plaque are removed above and below the gumline using hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers.
- Cleaning of Interdental Spaces: Special brushes, interdental brushes, and dental floss are used to clean areas that are difficult to reach.
- Polishing: Tooth surfaces are smoothed with polishing paste and a rotating polishing head to remove stains and reduce the ability of new deposits to adhere.
- Fluoride Application: A fluoride gel or varnish is applied to strengthen the enamel and protect against cavities.
- Oral Hygiene Instruction: Dental staff provide personalized guidance on improving daily oral care routines.
When is Professional Teeth Cleaning Recommended?
Most adults are advised to have a professional teeth cleaning one to two times per year. Individuals at higher risk for dental disease – such as those with periodontitis, diabetes mellitus, pregnancy, or those wearing braces or dental implants – may benefit from more frequent sessions, typically every three to four months.
Benefits and Health Impact
Regular professional teeth cleaning offers numerous health benefits:
- Prevention and management of dental caries (tooth decay)
- Reduction of the risk of periodontitis (gum disease)
- Removal of surface stains and improved aesthetics
- Fresher breath and reduced bad odour
- Positive impact on general health, as chronic gum inflammation has been associated with systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease
Cost and Insurance Coverage
In Germany, PZR is generally not covered by statutory health insurance and must be paid for privately as an individual health service (IGeL). However, many supplementary dental insurance plans cover part or all of the cost. Prices vary depending on the extent of treatment and the practice, typically ranging from 60 to 150 euros per session.
