Quercetin phytosomes are a highly bioavailable form of the plant compound quercetin, in which the active ingredient is bound to phospholipids to significantly enhance absorption by the body.
Quercetin phytosomes are a specialized, patented delivery form of the flavonoid quercetin, in which the plant-derived active compound is embedded within a phospholipid matrix. This technology – known as phytosome technology – substantially increases the naturally low bioavailability of quercetin. Phospholipids are fat-like molecules that also form part of human cell membranes, which facilitates the uptake of the active compound into the body.
Standard quercetin is poorly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract due to its low water solubility and susceptibility to digestive conditions. In phytosome technology, quercetin is chemically bound to phosphatidylcholine (a phospholipid). This bond protects the active compound from premature degradation and enables more efficient passage through the intestinal mucosa into the bloodstream.
Quercetin itself is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in many fruits and vegetables such as onions, apples, broccoli, and berries. It exhibits a broad spectrum of biological activities:
Studies on the phytosome form of quercetin show that bioavailability can be increased manifold compared to standard quercetin. Clinical investigations have demonstrated positive effects in:
The evidence base is promising; however, for some indications, further large-scale clinical trials are still required before definitive recommendations can be made.
Quercetin phytosomes are typically available as dietary supplements in capsule or tablet form. Typical dosages used in studies range from 250 mg to 500 mg per day. Due to their enhanced bioavailability, phytosome formulations may be effective at lower doses than conventional quercetin. Intake is ideally taken with a meal.
Quercetin phytosomes are considered well tolerated and safe at recommended dosages. In rare cases, mild gastrointestinal discomfort may occur. The following interactions should be noted:
Pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as individuals taking regular medications, should consult a healthcare professional before use.
