Reflux disease, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is a common disease of the digestive system in which stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus.
Normally, the lower oesophageal sphincter prevents stomach acid and other stomach contents from entering the oesophagus. However, in people with reflux disease, this sphincter muscle does not function properly, causing acid to flow back into the oesophagus and causing discomfort.
Obesity, poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, stress and certain medications can weaken the oesophageal sphincter muscle and promote the reflux of stomach acid.
Symptoms of reflux disease include frequent heartburn, acid regurgitation, chest pain and an unpleasant feeling in the throat or hoarseness. In more severe cases, inflammation or damage to the oesophagus can occur, which can lead to complications such as oesophagitis, narrowing or Barrett's oesophagus (affects the lining of the oesophagus), which increases the risk of oesophageal cancer.
Treatment consists primarily of lifestyle changes such as a healthier diet, weight reduction if overweight and avoidance of nicotine and alcohol. Medication such as proton pump inhibitors (PPI), which reduce stomach acid production, or antacids, which neutralise the acid, are often prescribed. In more severe cases where medication is not enough, surgery may be considered to prevent reflux.
Large meals can increase pressure on the stomach and increase the risk of gastric acid reflux. Smaller and more frequent meals are therefore beneficial. In addition, fatty, spicy and fried foods can relax the lower oesophageal sphincter and promote reflux. Carbonated drinks and citrus fruits, which can irritate the stomach, should also be reduced.
Magnesium, a mineral that regulates muscle tension, can help to strengthen the lower oesophageal sphincter and thus reduce the reflux of stomach acid. Magnesium-rich foods such as green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds are beneficial here. In addition, amino acids such as L-glutamine can help to repair and protect the mucous membranes in the digestive tract. People who suffer from inflammation of the oesophagus in particular can benefit from glutamine-rich foods such as pulses, nuts or animal protein. Another important nutrient is zinc, which promotes tissue healing and the repair of mucous membranes in the digestive tract. Zinc-rich foods such as pumpkin seeds, lentils and wholemeal products can help to alleviate acid-related irritation in the stomach.
