Things worth knowing about "Regeneration Hormone"

The regeneration hormone (growth hormone, HGH) regulates cell repair, muscle growth and tissue regeneration. It is mainly released during deep sleep.

What Is the Regeneration Hormone?

The term regeneration hormone is a colloquial name for the growth hormone (also known as HGH – Human Growth Hormone – or somatotropin). It is a peptide hormone produced by the pituitary gland at the base of the brain. It plays a central role in the repair and renewal of cells and tissues, muscle growth, and metabolic regulation. Due to its close connection with recovery, healing, and tissue regeneration, it is often referred to as the regeneration hormone in everyday language.

Mechanism of Action

The regeneration hormone acts on the body through two main pathways:

  • Direct action: HGH binds to specific receptors in fat cells and stimulates fat breakdown (lipolysis), providing the body with energy.
  • Indirect action: HGH stimulates the liver and other tissues to produce IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1), which promotes cell growth, cell division and protein synthesis in muscles, bones and organs.

Hormone secretion is especially pronounced during the first hours of deep sleep, which is why adequate sleep is considered essential for recovery and healing processes.

Biological Functions

The regeneration hormone fulfils numerous important functions in the body:

  • Promoting muscle growth and muscle recovery after physical exertion
  • Supporting bone development and bone density
  • Regulating fat and glucose metabolism
  • Stimulating cell repair and tissue regeneration
  • Strengthening the immune system
  • Enhancing wound healing
  • Supporting organ function, particularly of the heart, liver and kidneys

Factors Influencing Secretion

The production of the regeneration hormone is influenced by a variety of factors:

Promoting Factors

  • Deep, restorative sleep (especially during the first half of the night)
  • Intense physical exercise (particularly strength training and HIIT)
  • Caloric restriction and fasting (including intermittent fasting)
  • Certain amino acids such as arginine and glutamine
  • Reduction of stress and cortisol levels

Inhibiting Factors

  • Sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality
  • Chronic stress and elevated cortisol levels
  • High blood sugar and elevated insulin levels
  • Excess body weight, especially visceral fat
  • Increasing age (natural decline from the age of 30 onwards)

Changes Throughout Life

Secretion of the regeneration hormone is highest during childhood and adolescence, when it plays a key role in physical growth. From approximately the age of 30, production gradually declines – a process referred to as somatopause. This decline is associated with typical signs of aging such as muscle loss, increased body fat percentage and reduced regenerative capacity.

Clinical Significance and Disorders

Growth Hormone Deficiency

A growth hormone deficiency in childhood can lead to short stature. In adults, a deficiency manifests as reduced muscle mass, increased body fat, fatigue, reduced quality of life and impaired cardiovascular function. Diagnosis is made through stimulation tests and measurement of IGF-1 in the blood.

Growth Hormone Excess

Excessive production, usually caused by a pituitary adenoma (a benign tumour of the pituitary gland), leads to gigantism in children and acromegaly in adults – a condition characterized by coarsening of facial features and enlargement of the hands, feet and internal organs.

Medical Use of HGH

Synthetically produced growth hormone (somatropin) is used medically in the following conditions:

  • Growth hormone deficiency in children and adults
  • Turner syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome
  • Chronic renal insufficiency in children
  • HIV-associated lipodystrophy

The misuse of HGH as a doping or anti-aging substance is not medically recognized and is associated with considerable health risks.

Regeneration Hormone and Sport

In both competitive and recreational sports, the regeneration hormone is widely discussed because it supports muscle recovery after training, promotes fat loss, and accelerates injury healing. Through targeted exercise, sufficient sleep and a protein-rich diet, the natural secretion of the hormone can be optimized. The use of synthetic HGH preparations without a medical indication is strongly discouraged.
