Things worth knowing about "Removing a tick correctly"

Ticks must be removed quickly and correctly to minimize the risk of pathogen transmission. Learn how to safely and properly remove a tick.

What is a tick?

Ticks are small, blood-sucking arachnids that live in grasses, bushes, and forests. They can feed on humans and animals and in doing so may transmit dangerous pathogens. The best-known tick-borne diseases include Lyme disease (a bacterial infection) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) (a viral disease). Removing the tick as quickly and correctly as possible is essential to reducing the risk of infection.

Why is correct removal so important?

The longer a tick remains attached to the body, the higher the risk of pathogen transmission. Research shows that the bacteria causing Lyme disease are typically not transmitted until the tick has been feeding for several hours. TBE viruses, however, can be transmitted shortly after the bite. Therefore, the key principle is: remove ticks as early as possible and as gently as possible.

Step-by-step guide: How to remove a tick correctly

Follow these steps to safely remove a tick:

  • Prepare the right tools: Use fine-tipped tweezers, a tick removal card, tick forceps, or a dedicated tick hook. These tools are available at pharmacies.
  • Disinfect the skin: Clean the affected skin area before and after removal with a disinfectant.
  • Grasp the tick: Use the tweezers or tick tool to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, right at the head or mouthparts (hypostome). Do not grasp the body of the tick.
  • Pull the tick out: Pull the tick out slowly, steadily, and straight upward. Avoid jerking or twisting motions, as these can separate the body from the head.
  • Clean the wound: Thoroughly disinfect the bite site and wash your hands.
  • Do not squeeze or crush the tick: This can force the contents of the tick's gut into the wound, increasing the risk of infection.
  • Do not use home remedies: Applying oil, glue, nail polish, or similar substances is strongly discouraged, as these can stress the tick and promote the release of pathogens.

What to do if the tick head remains in the skin?

If the head or mouthparts of the tick remain in the skin after removal, there is no need to panic. In most cases, the body will naturally expel the foreign material on its own. The wound should still be disinfected and monitored. If signs of inflammation appear (redness, swelling, discharge of pus), consult a doctor.

When to see a doctor?

You should seek medical attention after a tick bite if:

  • A ring-shaped redness (erythema migrans) develops around the bite site – this can be an early sign of Lyme disease.
  • General symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, fatigue, or joint and muscle pain occur.
  • You have been in a TBE risk area and have not been vaccinated against TBE.
  • The bite site becomes inflamed or does not heal.

Prevention: Avoiding tick bites

The best protection against tick-borne diseases is preventing tick bites in the first place:

  • Wear long clothing and sturdy footwear when spending time outdoors.
  • Apply approved insect repellents to exposed skin and clothing.
  • After spending time in nature, thoroughly check your entire body for ticks, paying special attention to the backs of the knees, groin, armpits, and hairline.
  • Get vaccinated against TBE if you live in or visit a risk area.
