Rosavin is a phenylpropanoid glycoside found primarily in the medicinal plant Rhodiola rosea, commonly known as golden root or arctic root. It is one of the most important bioactive compounds in this plant and, together with salidroside, is largely responsible for its adaptogenic properties. An adaptogen is a substance that helps the body resist physical and psychological stress while supporting overall resilience and balance.
Sources and Occurrence
Rosavin occurs almost exclusively in Rhodiola rosea, making it a marker compound for the authentic identification of this plant species. Rhodiola rosea grows naturally in the mountainous regions of Europe, Asia, and North America, particularly in Siberia, Scandinavia, and the Caucasus. For therapeutic purposes, standardized extracts are used that contain defined concentrations of rosavins (typically 3 %) and salidroside (typically 1 %).
Mechanism of Action
The exact mechanism of action of rosavin is still being studied, but the following biological effects have been observed in research:

- Athletic performance: Rosavin may enhance physical endurance and shorten recovery time after intense exercise.

Dosage and Administration
Standardized Rhodiola rosea extracts containing at least 3 % rosavins and at least 1 % salidroside are considered high quality. Daily doses used in clinical studies typically range from 200 mg to 600 mg of extract per day. The extract is often taken in the morning or before physical or mental exertion, as Rhodiola extracts can have an activating effect. Rosavin vs. Salidroside
Rosavin and salidroside are often mentioned together, as both are active compounds found in Rhodiola rosea. While rosavin is specific to Rhodiola rosea and serves as a marker for its authenticity, salidroside also occurs in other plant species. Both compounds complement each other in their effects, which is why high-quality supplements contain both in a defined ratio.
