Respiratory syncytial virus belongs to the Pneumoviridae family and is primarily transmitted by droplet infection and direct contact. RSV is seasonal, with a high infection rate in the winter months, and is one of the main causes of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in young children.
The link between RSV and the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), which also belongs to the Pneumoviridae family, is interesting. Both viruses have similar disease patterns and transmission routes and, in rare cases, can cause infections together, which can lead to worsening of symptoms. This connection emphasises the importance of taking a comprehensive view of the two pathogens in diagnostics and treatment.
The symptoms of an RSV infection vary greatly and range from mild cold symptoms such as cough and runny nose to severe respiratory illness with shortness of breath and oxygen deficiency, particularly in vulnerable groups such as infants or immunocompromised individuals.In the course of research into supportive approaches to viral infections, lactoferrin has increasingly come into focus since COVID / SARS. This iron-binding protein is known for its versatile properties, which can both strengthen the immune system and provide a protective function for mucous membranes. The influence of lactoferrin on COVID has been heavily researched and is now well documented scientifically. It is hypothesised that lactoferrin may have a positive influence on the course of viral infections, including RSV and HMPV, through various mechanisms. As no specific antiviral therapy for RSV or HMPV is currently available, research is focussing on vaccines and preventive and supportive measures. Monoclonal antibodies already provide some protection for vulnerable individuals, while new approaches are being developed to reduce the burden of these viruses.
