Wissenswertes über "Scarlet fever"
Scarlet fever is a bacterial infectious disease caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus).
Children between the ages of 3 and 10 are particularly frequently affected, but adults can also fall ill. Infection occurs through droplet infection, e.g. through coughing or direct contact with infected people. Scarlet fever is characterised by a fine-spotted, red rash that spreads mainly on the upper body and is rough to the touch.Scarlet fever usually begins with a sudden fever, sore throat and difficulty swallowing. The tonsils are reddened, often covered with white-yellowish deposits and the lymph nodes on the neck may be swollen. Typical is the raspberry tongue, which initially turns whitish and later intensely red in colour. The rash usually appears one to two days after the first symptoms and disappears after about a week. The skin on the hands and feet may then flake off.
As scarlet feveris highly contagious, close contact with sick people should be avoided and hygiene measures such as regular hand washing should be observed. After surviving an infection, it is important to strengthen the immune system with a nutrient-rich diet, plenty of fluids and sufficient rest. With the right treatment, scarlet fever usually heals without complications, but a weakened immune system can increase the risk of re-infection. A conscious intake of important vitamins such as vitamin C & D and minerals such as zinc can help to strengthen the immune system in the long term and make the body more resistant to bacterial infections.
