The term is most commonly used in the context of the musculoskeletal system, but degenerative changes can occur in virtually every organ system in the body.

In the spine, degenerative signs commonly appear as osteophytes (bony outgrowths), disc herniation, spondylosis (vertebral wear), or spinal canal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal). These changes can cause pain, numbness, or restricted movement.
