What is Sinupret forte?

Sinupret forte is a herbal combination product used for the treatment of acute and chronic inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, known as sinusitis. It is available as a film-coated tablet and contains a high-dose dry extract derived from five medicinal plants. Compared to the standard Sinupret formulation, the forte version provides a higher concentration of active plant extract per tablet.

Ingredients and Mechanism of Action

Sinupret forte contains a standardized dry extract (BNO 1016) from the following plants:

Gentian root (Gentiana lutea): provides anti-inflammatory properties
Primrose flowers (Primula veris): promote secretion flow in the respiratory tract
Sorrel herb (Rumex acetosa): exhibits antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects
Elder flowers (Sambucus nigra): support immune defense and reduce mucosal swelling
Verbena herb (Verbena officinalis): has antiviral and immunomodulatory effects

The combined plant extract acts as a secretolytic agent (thins viscous mucus), promotes mucociliary clearance (helps transport secretions out of the sinuses), and exerts antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects. Together, these actions improve ventilation and drainage of the paranasal sinuses.

Indications

Sinupret forte is indicated for:

Acute sinusitis (inflammation of the paranasal sinuses)
Chronic sinusitis
Cold-related complaints involving swelling of the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract

Dosage and Administration

The recommended dosage for adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older is typically 1 film-coated tablet 3 times daily. The tablets should be swallowed with sufficient liquid. Exact dosing and duration of treatment should always be taken from the package insert or discussed with a doctor or pharmacist. Adequate fluid intake supports the mucus-thinning effect of the product.

Side Effects

Sinupret forte is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include:

Occasionally: gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea, stomach discomfort, or diarrhea
Rarely: allergic reactions (e.g., skin rash, itching)
In rare cases: hypersensitivity reactions in individuals with known allergy to one of the ingredients

The product should not be taken if a known hypersensitivity to any of the herbal ingredients exists.

Contraindications and Important Notes

Sinupret forte should not be used in cases of:
