Sivananda Yoga is a traditional, holistic yoga style developed and brought to the Western world in the 1950s by the Indian physician and yoga master Swami Vishnu-devananda. It is rooted in the teachings of Swami Sivananda Saraswati, a revered spiritual teacher from India. At its core, Sivananda Yoga offers a comprehensive health philosophy that addresses body, mind, and spirit equally.
Sivananda Yoga is built on five fundamental principles that together promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle:
A classical Sivananda Yoga class follows a fixed structure and typically lasts 90 minutes. It begins with a relaxation phase in Savasana (Corpse Pose), followed by breathing exercises (Pranayama) and Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar). The main body of the class consists of twelve classical basic postures (Asanas) practiced in a specific sequence, targeting all major muscle groups and organ systems. The class concludes with another period of deep relaxation.
Regular practice of Sivananda Yoga can offer a wide range of health benefits:
Sivananda Yoga is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. Its clearly structured sequence and comparatively gentle intensity make it particularly accessible for beginners. At the same time, the depth of the asanas and meditation practices offers significant potential for experienced practitioners as well. Individuals with existing health conditions are advised to consult a physician before starting practice.
Sivananda Yoga is deeply rooted in classical yoga philosophy and Vedanta. Its aim goes beyond physical fitness to encompass full self-realization and the promotion of peace – both within the individual and throughout society. The guiding motto of the Sivananda organization is: “Serve, love, give, purify, meditate, realize.”
