A skin rash, medically known as an exanthema, is a visible change in the skin that can be characterised by redness, swelling, blisters, wheals or scaling. It can occur acutely or chronically and can have various causes, including allergies, infections, skin diseases or irritants such as chemicals or medication. Common triggers are neurodermatitis, contact allergies, hives (urticaria) or viral infections such as measles or rubella.

The symptoms of a skin rash vary depending on the cause. Some rashes are harmless and disappear by themselves, others are accompanied by severe itching, burning or pain. Allergic skin reactions or inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema in particular require targeted treatment to protect the skin barrier and reduce inflammation.

The treatment of a rash depends largely on its cause. For allergic skin reactions in particular, antihistamines are used to block the release of histamine and thus relieve itching and swelling. In the case of inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, neurodermatitis or psoriasis, cortisone-containing creams are often used to inhibit inflammation and stabilise the skin barrier. In the long term, however, immunomodulating agents such as calcineurin inhibitors can also help to regulate skin reactions without the side effects of cortisone.

In addition to drug therapies, the targeted intake of nutrients plays a crucial role in skin health. Zinc is particularly important due to its wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties. It strengthens the skin barrier and supports the regeneration of damaged skin. Omega-3 fatty acids also have an anti-inflammatory effect and can soothe dry, irritated skin. They are particularly helpful for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, as they improve the elasticity of the skin and reduce moisture loss. In addition, lactoferrin has antimicrobial and immunoregulatory properties that can support skin rashes caused by inflammation or infection. It helps to balance the immune system and may help to better control bacterial or viral skin infections
