Wissenswertes über "Sleep hormone"
Melatonin, often referred to as the ""sleep hormone"", plays a central role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle.
Melatonin is mainly produced in the pineal gland in the brain and is increasingly released as soon as it gets dark. Melatonin signals to the body that it is time to prepare for sleep by controlling the internal clock and helping the body to rest.
The natural increase in melatonin in the evening promotes falling asleep, while the level drops again in the morning due to daylight, which keeps the body awake and active. The hormone therefore acts as an antagonist to cortisol, the ""stress hormone"" that keeps us alert during the day.
Melatonin is also a popular dietary supplement that can help with sleep problems such as jet lag or shift work to bring the sleep-wake rhythm back into balance. A well-regulated melatonin level is crucial for a restful night's sleep and contributes to general health and well-being.
