It is aimed at individuals suffering from insomnia (inability to sleep), hypersomnia (excessive daytime sleepiness), sleep apnea, parasomnias (e.g., sleepwalking), or other sleep-related conditions. Since high-quality sleep is essential for both physical and mental health, sleep therapy holds an important place in modern medicine.

Causes of Sleep Disorders

Sleep disorders can have a wide variety of causes, including:

  • Mental health conditions: Stress, anxiety disorders, depression, and burnout are among the most common triggers.
  • Physical illnesses: Chronic pain, cardiovascular disease, respiratory conditions, or hormonal imbalances.
  • Environmental factors: Noise, light exposure, unsuitable room temperature, or an irregular sleep-wake schedule.
  • Lifestyle factors: Excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption, shift work, or jet lag.
  • Medications: Certain drugs can interfere with normal sleep patterns.

Methods of Sleep Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is considered the most effective and best-researched treatment for chronic insomnia. It includes techniques such as sleep restriction, stimulus control, cognitive restructuring of negative thoughts about sleep, and relaxation exercises. CBT-I helps individuals identify and change unhelpful sleep habits and beliefs.

Sleep Hygiene

Sleep hygiene refers to a set of behavioral recommendations that promote healthy sleep. These include keeping regular sleep and wake times, maintaining a quiet and dark sleeping environment, avoiding screens before bedtime, and engaging in physical activity during the day.

Relaxation Techniques

Methods such as Progressive Muscle Relaxation (Jacobson method), Autogenic Training, Mindfulness Meditation, and breathing exercises can help calm the nervous system and facilitate the transition into sleep.

Light Therapy

Light therapy is used to regulate the internal sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm). It is particularly effective for seasonal sleep disturbances, jet lag, or sleep problems related to shift work. Patients are exposed to a bright light source in the morning to help control melatonin production.

Pharmacological Treatment

In certain cases, sleep medications (hypnotics) or other drugs may be used on a short-term basis. These include benzodiazepines, Z-drugs (e.g., zolpidem), low-dose antidepressants, or herbal preparations such as valerian. Pharmacological treatment should always be supervised by a physician and used for the shortest possible time to avoid dependence.

CPAP Therapy for Sleep Apnea

For obstructive sleep apnea, CPAP therapy (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is the standard treatment. A mask delivers a gentle stream of pressurized air into the airway, preventing the upper airway from collapsing during sleep.

Diagnosis

Various tools are used to diagnose sleep disorders:

  • Sleep diary: Recording sleep and wake times over several weeks.
  • Questionnaires: Standardized tools such as the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) or the Epworth Sleepiness Scale.
  • Polysomnography: A comprehensive sleep laboratory examination recording brain activity, eye movements, muscle activity, heart rhythm, and breathing.
  • Actigraphy: Measuring movement patterns over an extended period using a wrist-worn sensor.

When to See a Doctor

If sleep problems persist for more than four weeks and affect performance or quality of life, a medical evaluation is strongly recommended. Symptoms such as loud snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, extreme daytime fatigue, or restless legs should prompt an early consultation with a healthcare professional.
