What is Sodium Aluminosilicate?
Sodium aluminosilicate is an inorganic compound composed of sodium, aluminium, silicon, and oxygen. In the food industry, it is registered under the E number E554 as an approved food additive. It belongs to the category of anti-caking agents and is primarily used in powdered food products to improve flowability and prevent the particles from sticking together or forming lumps.
Occurrence and Applications
Sodium aluminosilicate occurs naturally in various minerals but is synthetically produced for food use. It is commonly found in the following products:
- Table salt and seasoning salts
- Dried milk powder and coffee creamers
- Spice blends and instant food products
- Baking powder and pudding mixes
- Certain soup and sauce powders
The substance works by absorbing moisture and coating individual powder particles, which prevents them from adhering to each other and keeps the product free-flowing.
Regulatory Approval
In the European Union, sodium aluminosilicate (E554) is approved under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has assessed the substance and classified it as safe for certain food categories within specified maximum limits. The permitted maximum levels typically range between 10 and 30 g/kg of the final product, depending on the food category.
Health Assessment
The health assessment of sodium aluminosilicate is particularly relevant with regard to its aluminium content. Aluminium is a widely occurring metal that may have potentially neurotoxic effects when ingested in large amounts. EFSA has established a tolerable weekly intake (TWI) for aluminium from all dietary sources. However, aluminium from food additives such as E554 is only minimally absorbed in the body, as the compound is largely insoluble in the gastrointestinal tract.
- The absorption rate of aluminium from sodium aluminosilicate is considered very low.
- Under normal dietary conditions and when maximum permitted levels are observed, the risk is considered acceptable.
- Individuals with impaired kidney function should be mindful of elevated aluminium intake, as renal excretion may be reduced.
Labelling Requirements
Under EU food labelling regulations, food additives must be declared in the ingredient list of the product. Sodium aluminosilicate may be listed either by its full name or as E554. Consumers who wish to avoid aluminium-containing additives can identify relevant products by checking the ingredient list on the packaging.
