Natriumchlorid (NaCl), allgemein als Kochsalz bekannt, ist eines der am häufigsten verwendeten Mineralstoffe und spielt eine zentrale Rolle im menschlichen Körper.
Natriumchlorid setzt sich aus den beiden Elektrolyten Natrium und Chlorid zusammen, die für den Flüssigkeits- und Elektrolythaushalt von entscheidender Bedeutung sind. Natriumchlorid hilft, das Blutvolumen und den Blutdruck zu regulieren und ermöglicht eine reibungslose Nervenleitung sowie die Muskelkontraktion.
Täglicher Kochsalzbedarf liegt laut der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) bei etwa 5 g, was ungefähr 2 g Natrium entspricht. Der Hauptanteil des Natriums wird über Kochsalz aufgenommen, welches in Fleisch, Fisch, Milchprodukten sowie in vielen verarbeiteten Lebensmitteln enthalten ist. Zu wenig Natriumchlorid führt zu Elektrolytstörungen, Niedrigblutdruck oder Muskelschwäche, während eine zu hohe Aufnahme langfristig Bluthochdruck und Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen begünstigen kann. Es wird empfohlen, den Salzkonsum zu überwachen und übermäßigen Verzehr zu vermeiden.
Neben der Rolle als Elektrolyt ist Natriumchlorid auch in der Medizin von Bedeutung. Es wird als Infusionslösung bei Dehydration oder Elektrolytstörungen eingesetzt und dient als Basis für medizinische Kochsalzlösungen. Ein häufig verwendetes Produkt ist die physiologische Kochsalzlösung, die zur Wundbehandlung genutzt wird.
