Things worth knowing about "Soolantra"
Soolantra is a prescription medication used to treat rosacea. It contains the active ingredient ivermectin and is applied as a cream directly to the skin.
What is Soolantra?
Soolantra is a prescription topical medication approved for the treatment of papulopustular rosacea in adults. It is formulated as a cream containing ivermectin at a concentration of 10 mg/g (1%). Soolantra has been authorized by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and belongs to the class of antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory agents used in dermatology.
Indication
Soolantra is used to treat rosacea, a chronic inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the face. In the papulopustular form, the most common signs include:
- Red papules (small, raised skin lesions)
- Pustules (pimple-like lesions filled with fluid)
- Persistent facial redness and flushing
The medication is approved for use in adults aged 18 years and older only.
Mechanism of Action
The active ingredient ivermectin in Soolantra works through two complementary mechanisms:
Antiparasitic Effect
Ivermectin targets Demodex mites, microscopic parasites that naturally inhabit the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of human skin. In individuals with rosacea, the density of these mites is often significantly elevated. It is believed that the mites and the immune response they trigger contribute to the characteristic inflammation of rosacea. Ivermectin disrupts the mites' nerve signaling by activating glutamate-gated chloride channels, leading to paralysis and death of the parasites.
Anti-inflammatory Effect
In addition to its antiparasitic activity, ivermectin also exerts direct anti-inflammatory effects. It reduces the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and suppresses the overactive immune responses that contribute to the visible symptoms of rosacea.
Dosage and Application
Soolantra is applied once daily in the evening to a clean, dry face. The recommended routine includes:
- Cleanse and gently pat the face dry
- Apply a pea-sized amount to the forehead, chin, nose, each cheek, and neck if affected
- Spread evenly and massage gently until fully absorbed
- Avoid contact with eyes, lips, and mucous membranes
The recommended treatment duration is at least 12 weeks, after which the clinician should assess the therapeutic response.
Side Effects
Soolantra is generally well tolerated. Reported side effects include:
- Common: Burning or stinging sensation at the application site
- Uncommon: Skin irritation, itching, dry skin
- Rare: Contact dermatitis or allergic reactions
If side effects are persistent or severe, patients should consult their healthcare provider.
Contraindications and Interactions
Soolantra should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to ivermectin or any of its excipients. Caution is advised in the following situations:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women (use only after medical evaluation)
- Children and adolescents under 18 years of age (not approved for this age group)
- Concurrent use of other topical products on the face
