Things worth knowing about "Specialist in Ophthalmology"

A specialist in ophthalmology is a medical doctor trained to diagnose and treat diseases and disorders of the eye and visual system.

What Is a Specialist in Ophthalmology?

A specialist in ophthalmology, commonly referred to as an ophthalmologist, is a fully qualified medical doctor who has completed additional specialist training in the field of eye medicine. Ophthalmology covers the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of diseases and conditions affecting the eye, eyelids, tear ducts, and surrounding structures. Ophthalmologists are distinct from optometrists and opticians, as they are qualified to perform surgery and manage complex medical eye conditions.

Education and Qualifications

To become a specialist in ophthalmology, a physician must first complete a full medical degree, followed by a specialist training programme lasting at least five years. This training includes supervised clinical practice in ophthalmology departments, development of surgical skills, and in-depth study of diagnostic techniques. The specialist title is awarded only after the successful completion of a formal specialist examination.

Roles and Areas of Practice

Ophthalmologists carry out a wide range of medical and surgical tasks, including:

  • Diagnostic examinations: Assessment of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye, measurement of intraocular pressure, visual acuity testing, and visual field analysis
  • Treatment of eye diseases: Including cataracts, glaucoma, retinal diseases, corneal conditions, and inflammatory eye disorders
  • Surgical procedures: Cataract surgery, retinal laser treatment, refractive surgery (e.g. LASIK), and operations on the eyelids and tear ducts
  • Prescription of glasses and contact lenses: Correction of refractive errors such as short-sightedness, long-sightedness, and astigmatism
  • Preventive eye care: Screening for eye diseases, particularly in high-risk groups such as patients with diabetes or older adults

Common Conditions Treated

Ophthalmologists diagnose and treat a broad spectrum of eye conditions, including:

  • Cataract: Clouding of the eye lens leading to progressive vision impairment
  • Glaucoma: Elevated intraocular pressure that can cause permanent damage to the optic nerve
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): A condition affecting the central part of the retina, impairing central vision
  • Diabetic retinopathy: Retinal damage caused by long-term diabetes mellitus
  • Conjunctivitis: Inflammation of the conjunctiva, commonly caused by infection or allergy
  • Strabismus (squint): Misalignment of the eyes, often diagnosed and treated in childhood

When to See an Ophthalmologist

It is recommended to consult an ophthalmologist in the following situations:

  • Sudden or gradual deterioration in vision
  • Eye pain, persistent redness, or excessive tearing
  • Flashes of light, floaters, or a shadow in the visual field (possible signs of retinal detachment)
  • Routine eye check-ups from the age of 40 onwards
  • Existing systemic conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure that may affect the eyes
