How long does a stomach bug last? Most cases resolve within 1 to 3 days. Learn when symptoms improve and when to seek medical advice.

Stomach Bug: How Long Does It Last?

A stomach bug – medically known as gastroenteritis – is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines, usually caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites. One of the most common questions is: How long does a stomach bug last? The answer depends on the cause, the pathogen involved, and the general health of the affected person.

Typical Duration by Cause

Viral Gastroenteritis

The most common form is caused by viruses such as norovirus or rotavirus. In healthy adults, a viral stomach bug typically lasts 1 to 3 days. Children, older adults, or people with weakened immune systems may be affected for longer – up to 5 to 7 days.

Bacterial Gastroenteritis

Bacterial infections, for example caused by Salmonella, Campylobacter, or E. coli, can last longer. These infections typically last 3 to 7 days, and sometimes longer if antibiotic treatment is not given.

Parasitic Gastroenteritis

Less commonly, infections caused by parasites such as Giardia lamblia can persist for several weeks without treatment and usually require specific medication.

Symptoms and Course of Illness

The typical symptoms of a stomach bug include:

  • Loose stools or diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps and stomach pain
  • Fever (more common with bacterial infections)
  • Fatigue and general weakness

Symptoms usually begin a few hours to two days after exposure and resolve within a few days in uncomplicated cases.

When to See a Doctor

In most cases, a stomach bug resolves on its own. However, medical attention should be sought if:

  • Symptoms last longer than 3 days
  • Severe dehydration occurs (dizziness, dry mouth, minimal urination)
  • High fever is present (above 38.5 °C / 101.3 °F)
  • Blood in the stool or vomit is visible
  • Infants, young children, or elderly persons are affected
  • Chronic underlying health conditions are present

Treatment and Recovery Time

Treatment of a stomach bug is usually supportive and focuses on symptom relief:

  • Fluid replacement: Drink plenty of fluids; use oral rehydration solutions (ORS) in cases of significant diarrhea
  • Bland diet: Easy-to-digest foods such as toast, rice, or bananas
  • Rest: The body needs time to recover
  • Medications: Fever reducers or anti-nausea medications as advised by a doctor

Antibiotics are only appropriate for confirmed bacterial infections and are not routinely prescribed.

Contagion Risk and Hygiene Tips

Many stomach bug pathogens are highly contagious, especially norovirus. The risk of transmission persists as long as symptoms are present – and with norovirus, for up to 48 hours after symptoms resolve. Important hygiene measures include:

  • Washing hands with soap after using the toilet
  • Avoiding sharing towels or utensils
  • Disinfecting toilets and bathroom surfaces
